English novelist, and the oldest of the three sisters. Her Jane Eyre was originally written under the pen name Currer Bell.

1922 - Alistair MacLean
Scottish novelist, three of whose thriller were made into action films in the 1960's.

1936 - James Dobson
American evangelical Christian author and founder of Focus on the Family.

1939 - Helene Prejean
American Roman Catholic sister, death penalty abolition advocate, and author of the book Dead Man Walking.

1946 - Patrick Rambaud
French author, winner of the 1997 Prix Goncourt for his book The Battle (La Bataille.)

1947 - Barbara Park
American author of children's books, in particular the Junie B. Jones series.

1910 - Mark Twain
1948 - Aldo Leopold
